WORK:
CHOOSING THE VOLUNTARY SERVICE
Passionist Life today involves immersion in the
lives of others in a contemplative way. As we
entering into this Pilgrimage to World Youth
Day, all pilgrims are invited to take on a personal
project of immersion in the work of voluntary
service for a minimum of 40 hours, or a
week of our time.
The number of 40 has a Biblical and Spiritual
dimension. Jesus spent 40 days in the desert
preparing for his mission ahead. Catholics in
the past participated in the 40 hours devotions.
You are invited into this tradition of 40 hours.
The 40 hours might be done as a dedicated
week. It might be done as, say, components of
2 hours, ie, 20 units of time.
If you are not sure where to begin, ask for some
ideas from the following:
• your local parish
• your local Passionist contact
• your Community Centre
• your St Vincent de Paul Society
• other service agencies in your locality.
WORK:
CONTEMPLATING ON THE SERVICE:
After each time of Service, we are asked to record
our memories and reflections on the experience
in our Pilgrimage Journal. Some of the
reflections might take the following shape:
. What was the nature of the Service I provided
today?
. Who did I meet on the Journey today?
. Where did I see the face of Jesus, the Crucified
and Risen One, today?
. What is my prayer?

Also, on the net you might find options to serve
that are not local, but might involves a week or
more of your time during the summer break.
Contact you local co-ordinator for some ideas.
FOR PERSONAL REFLECTION
. What service do I feel called to at this
time?
. When will I begin this service?
. How will I record this in my Journal?
