The Passionists came to Australia
from England and Ireland
in 1887 establishing
their first residence in Marrickville,
about 10km from
the city centre. This was
nearly the end of the city of
its day at Cooks River. The
present imposing Church was
built in the 1920’s.
What was essentially an Irish Catholic Community change
after World War II with the migration of large contingents of
Italians, then Greeks. Today, the population is more diverse
with people from many nations and many faith traditions.
St Brigid’s Retreat (The Monastery) has a large community of
Passionists, who serve in a broad range of ministries. It includes
the Provincial Offices of Holy Spirit Province, and offers
hospitality to many visiting Passionists.
Marrickville is well served by Public Transport, with the Sydney
CBD only 30 mins away by bus, or 15 mins by train
(after a 10 min walk to the station).
